Hello everyone, I’m new here but I have watch many videos of Eric the car guy, lol….I also have a little knowledge of simple mechanical issues. Anyways I have a 94 Honda civic for 18 yrs so I know a little of how it works, but this time it’s eating me, lol…..
It he car has been sitting for a long time, I would turn it on n take it for a spin 1x 2x a month, I had give me fuel pump problems from sitting on old gas, after a spin around the block I would shut it off and it would start also it has shut off by itself. After waiting for a while it would start. The fuel pump would not prime, since I have never replace it n been sitting for long so I decide to replace it, come to find that it still not priming, so I check the relay (pgm-fi) main, and also replaced the fuel pump relay. Now still NOTHING, no prime.
So I did a few troubleshooting…..spark plugs, igniter, rotor, coils, and even thought that the coils had some oil when I open it, everything has spark. I also did some relay troubleshooting ,I put a continuity tester from #1 n #7 and apply 12v to the relay, #2 been my grnd and #5 been +, now I get a clicking sound like the relay its closing but no continuity between the pump and anything. Not sure if I’m doing this right, but I NEED HELP……. I have included some pictures of the relay, diagrams of relay, and top of fuel pump. Also I check for fuel pressure by turn the ignition to the on position and fuel coming out of the filter, also I forgot to to said that out of the top of the pump I’m not getting any power with or without the ignition been on, hope I have explain good so ur guys can help me, thx…rob….

After thinking about the jumper installed at main relay, now need to change a posting.
Jumpers should only be used for troubleshooting only.
It is NOT safe to run a car with jumper install at main relay.

I’ll start with 2 things. Honda ECU’s and fuel pumps hardly ever go bad. In my opinion you should put them at the bottom of the list of possible suspects, especially since you’ve already replace the fuel pump without result. In fact, I would recommend going back to the Honda OE pump before using an aftermarket one. The electrical portion of the ignition switch was a good call as that IS a common problem that causes a no start condition. The main relay is too. You can fix them however. Just wondering if you might have an aftermarket security system or any other aftermarket electrical components installed.

You might want to remove the security system and recheck for the symptoms. Also not a bad idea to check the fuse box. I often see security systems and aftermarket accessories installed by wrapping the power feed wire around a fuse and sticking it in the fuse box. If you do this you can damage the connection in the fuse box causing a loose connection which can show up as an intermittent failure like the one you have.

No,this USA Honda Civic ecu controls one ground for one coil of main relay.
This type of main relay has two coils and contacts.
Ecu controls the ground for coil who contacts supplies power to fuel pump.

Honda ej9 is UK version of USA Honda Civic.
You need to locate wiring diagram for Honda ej9 and check if same as Honda Civic.

i had the same thing happen on my 94 accord. i put a lead from the battery all the way to the pump and ran it that way for a little bit, after i plugged the original connector back in after running it, the pump would run. i was reading something about the ecu and how it has a cutoff integrated in it, once you bypass the pump from the ecu and let it run, it resets the cutoff. i think it was their answer to no inertia switch. another thing you can look at if you havent already is to find the ground for the fuel system electrical. ive had that stump me out once or twice too.
