This morning I tried to remote start my truck as I do every morning. Sometimes it takes two times for the alarm to start the truck because it doesn’t crank it long enough. I heard it try the third time without it starting. I went out and turned the remote start option off and tried to start it with a key. It just keeps cranking but doesn’t attempt to start.

I waited a few minutes thinking maybe the alarm system locked it out for some reason and tried and it still doesn’t start. I can hear the fuel pump priming each time I turn the key on. Now I know to check for spark and fuel. I will do that as soon as I get home. Lets just assume that it is getting spark and fuel. What would my next steps be? The truck has the 5.7 in it with a distributor ignition.

Also it looks like it could be the ignition control module. Can someone describe how to test this on a 94 5.7? Thanks

i would check your fuses first
          can check for codes

if there is no codes then next would try the basics
          Air filter
          Fuel Filter
          Spark

if you can hear the pump start i don’t think that it would be a alarm issue(i think)
can check the psi i think it should be no less than 9 psi (TBI)
if psi is good it starts but wont idle then look for vac leak

Here is what I have found so far. I checked and both injectors are squirting fuel into the throttle body. I checked the coil on top of the distributor and it is getting spark. I also checked 3 other spark plug wires and they were receiving spark too. I checked all the fuses and they are good. I used a test light and grounded the DLC to read codes. It flashed the code 12 3 times and then flashed code 54 3 times.

I tried replacing the fuel pump relay while leaving the old one bolted to the firewall. Still nothing. Also it doesn’t start by spraying starter fluid in the intake.

Code 54 is the fuel pump relay, But did you also check the connections. What about the oil pressure switch. I think RobinsonsAuto Channel on you tube had a video you might check out. That had this same problem. Id check the oil pressure switch.

Would the oil pressure sensor keep the truck from starting even when spraying starter fluid directly into the intake

In the Haynes Manual for 94 trucks it says to test the fuel pump relay start the engine and let it idle and unplug the fuel pump relay,if the engine stops the oil pressure switch is faulty,If the engine keeps running reconnect the relay turn off the truck. Use a test light and probe the fuel pump test terminal.if the light does not come on the relay is good.If the light comes on the oil pressure switch is bad. But since you can’t start your truck, I would test the way I just described. The video I told you about is pretty informative.its a 95 truck he works on. With a no start problem.I have a 94 truck also so I’ll help as much as I can.

I went out this morning. I was unable to find the oil pressure switch to test it. Can you tell me where it is located? And or how to test it?

I went to try and crank it this morning and it did the same thing. I pulled the oil fill cap off and had someone crank it and I was able to observe some movement from one of the valve springs as it compressed and moved like it should, so I guess the timing chain is still fine.

I unhooked the fuel pump relay and was gonna start testing EVERY cylinder for spark since I only tested three yesterday. I unhooked the relay so it wouldn’t flood the truck with gas. I had my spark plug tester on the front left cylinder and had someone crank it. This time the engine actually seemed to try and run.

I put the plug wire back on and reconnected the fuel relay harness and tried having them crank it over while i sprayed starter fluid. It didn’t run on the starter fluid. Once the relay was plugged back in, the engine ceased trying to start or run at all.

I unplugged the fuel pump relay again and had someone try and start it. It started trying to start. As soon as the key stops cranking the engine dies. After cranking it several times it eventually goes back to not trying to start at all. Leaving the fuel pump relay unhooked this time, I sprayed a little starter fluid in there and that actually got it back to attempting to start. I will try and get a video of this.

The oil pressure switch is just to the right of the distributor its silver color. Its plugged in by a connector. Put your test light to the connectors.

here is a video to help show you what its doing. I will look for the oil pressure sensor and check it

I believe I found it. The red or orange wire lights the test light, the other two don’t light. If I turn the ignition on, the top terminal lights the test light but dimly. The last terminal is showing ground. I tested the terminal when it was unplugged from the oil pressure sensor. I left both the oil pressure sensor and the fuel pump relay unplugged and tried to start it. It does the same thing where it attempts to start and even did start and run for a second and then promptly died.

Just found out that you can keep the truck running by slowly feeding it starter fluid but it runs rough. If you spray it too fast it almost seems to flood it out. Only tries to start when the relay is unplugged. If its plugged in, it doesn’t try to start.

I get the feeling starting fluid is not going to cure the problem. Something is keeping it from staying running. Did ypu check the fuel filter? You should also check the timing to see if its right.

I didn’t check the fuel filter yet as it is getting fuel at the injectors I figured the filter was ok. How do I check the timing I never did that before
