I am replacing the unit, following the procedure in the Haynes Guide. I am trying the feed the new wire and rectangular wire connector for the switch down through the steering column. It seems to be “stuck” about 1/3 of the way down. I am pushing carefully on it with a long screwdriver, but it just does not seem to want to go any further down the steering column. I am concerned if I push too hard and try to force it I am going to break the rectangular connector and then have a real mess. Any advice on how to get out of this predicament would be appreciated! ~ Pop

Update: I was able to pull it back out so I can start over. So I think what I will try is tie some semi-stiff wire around the rectangular socket, fish the wire down through the steering column, and then pull the socket and wire loom down through. Hopefully that will work.

Got it. I could not feed the rectangular socket through the steering column too save my life. So I cut the wires, fed the cut ends through, then spliced the cut ends back to the socket.

Wish I would have seen this before…You can do the opposite of what you did for installation…cut the top of the harness..by the switch and tape the new on and pull through the column.

Either way you repaired it….good job

Wow. That makes a LOT more sense to do it that way. I’ll remember that for next time. Thanks!

I now have a question on reassembly. I know what to do on everything except for the parts in the pictures below. I was not paying attention when the assembly including the parts I’ve drawn arrows to came apart. How does this go back together, specifically how is the metal rod to be oriented with respect too the plastic part that is hanging from it? How can I test it to be sure it is correct before continuing reassembly of the rest of the steering column?

I was in a junkyard over the weekend and while there I took apart a similar steering column, and saw how the parts go together. In caase anyone else ever runs into this p[roblem in a similar vehicle, for the record the plastic insert needs to enable the multi-function lever to push on the metal L-shaped actuator rod; in order to control the brights/low beam headlight function.
