Hello…I have a 93 honda civic with the 1.6l vtec (d16z6) and it starts and runs great, but sometimes when I have been driving and stop at a gas station or store it won’t start…after cranking and cranking on it, it finally starts but it’s smokes and idles rough…the smoke does clear then it returns to its normal great running. This is happening more and more and I want to get it fixed ASAP….any ideas? Thanks in advance

I had an older jeep that did about the same thing u might want to see about doing a compression test on it and see if you have good compression, could be leaking around the rings. If that proves to be good i would check the pcv it could be stuck open which could bring oil straight into the intake fouling your plugs. Have u pulled your plugs yet try that first easiest way to tell what it is doing if it is burning on one cylinder or all. hopefully this will get u started and is helpful not saying it is the answer but could be a good place to start. Also u need to determine if it is gas or oil, like my old jeep i had a lot of problems but had the same thing ended up being the fuel regulator that fixed my no start problem.

You may be flooded.Try holding the pedal to the floor
while trying to start it. check your ignition components.

Ok noticed some new symptoms…when I turn the car off if I immediately try to start it it will start without issue…but if it sits more than a minute it doesn’t wanna start…to me it’s acting as tho it’s flooding everytime I run into a gas station or a store…when I hold it on the floor it tries to start and all at once it will start but run real crappy and smoke till I rev it a bit…then it clears up without anymore problem…where should I start diagnosing?

What color is the smoke? Did you try the above suggestions?

When stopped and a hot engine, not running, open the hood and pull the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator to see if any fuel leaks out. There should be NO fuel there. If there is the fuel pressure regulator is faulty and needs to be replaced.

If ok the next most likely cause is leaking injectors. Other than viewing the inside of each cylinder with a boroscope through the spark plug holes for leaking fuel you would need to have the injectors tested and/or replace them.
