Hey guys! Really just need a suggestion here:

I have a 93 civic with a stock D15B7, and I have air in coming up though my radiator. Head gasket, cracked or warped head, or cracked sleeve I know the possibilities. I replaced the HG because I had oil in my coolant, and the new HG fixed that. But I still have a little air come though my radiator @ high RPMS, it’s only under high pressure, and it’s very little, doesn’t look like boiling water.

A friend and experienced mechanic told me he believes the pressure built up from the bad HG leak caused and internal crack in the head. The car has almost 270K miles, pulling the head again and pressure testing it, resurfacing, new bolts, and new HG really aren’t worth the cost. I want to replace the engine early next year anyways with an imported low mileage from Japan. This car sees 500 miles a week, it’s my DD.

I read about Blue Devil HG repair. I don’t like this method (seems lazy, might waste time…) But for $40 or so it has some several success stories, and may work out for 3 months that I need it to. My car doesn’t loose much coolant, doesn’t overheat, just has an annoying/rough idle sometimes, and I can feel slight performance loss. Has anyone had experience with liquid HG repairs? It seems to seal larger leaks than I need it to, and there are tests on youtube. Any suggestions? They CLAIM to refund money if it doesn’t work, and even have a form to fill out, but who knows if they stand behind it. Thanks for any input.

A see a couple things wrong here.

You replaced the head gasket already, and you say you are still getting some bubbles in the radiator. To me this means a few things.

        1. The bubbles could very well just be air in the cooling system. Bleed the system thoroughly.
        2. The cylinder head bolts were not torqued correctly.
        3. There is a crack in the block.

Any type of liquid HG sealer would not fix any of these problems in any sort of respect. It would only prove to clog up your cooling system with metal particulates.

PS: I generally do not agree with using head gasket sealers.

If you just need this for 3 months, you might try what worked for me on a VW Rabbit engine– overtorque the head bolts by like 25%. That worked for like 2 more years..

I agree, nothing good comes out of using instant head gasket fix. It WILL clog up your radiator, your heater core, your thermostat, pretty much everything but the damned leak you are trying to fix.

+1 to check torque on head bolts, make certain they have been properly torqued to spec, in three steps, and in the proper sequence, and make certain you have properly and completely bled all air out of the cooling system, then, run the engine, every day. Keep an eye on the coolant level, refill as needed, and just keep running it. I have had engines with a known head gasket leak last for years, you have a fair chance of getting through a few months.

Hey thanks for the quick responses!

I’ll steer clear of the liquid gasket repair. After a week or so after the HG repair, I had re-checked the torque with a different torque wrench. I used a needle type wrench the first time, came back a week or so later and checked it again with a click type; all were correct.

I have bled and re-bled it twice. Until the fan kicks on 3 times (I think the Helms manual states 2 times).

It’s such a slow coolant leak (internal), and doesn’t over heat that i’ll probably drive it until tax season.

The pressure from the bad HG was enough to blow the cap off of the reservoir, whats the chance I have an internal head crack? I also thought of a cracked sleeve, BUT my car isn’t boosted nor is it detonating.
