I don’t see how I can use the Honda special removal tool, my manual doesn’t mention much about how to remove the pulley. I want to make sure I have all the tool necessary before beginning my timing belt removal.

Now I see my crankshaft doesn’t have a way to grip the removal tool

Your vehicle doesn’t have the type of pulley designed for the tool. the pulleys that use the special tool have a hexagon machined into them to accept the tool. an impact gun is the easiest way. if you don’t have one then you can do this – notice the part of the pulley with all the holes around the perimeter- get a piece of flat stock ( inch and a quarter wide by 3/16 and long enough to reach from the pulley to the floor ) drill two holes in the flat stock to line up with two holes in the pulley , use two grade 8 bolts as pins to hold the tool you make to the pulley . with the tool wedged against the floor to keep the pulley from turning you can then use a big breaker bar to crack the bolt loose.

The Civic’s haven’t used a design where you could insert the special tool. For the most part I’ve been able to remove that bolt with an impact without any issues.
