I have seen this brought up here in past threads, and Eric has dealt with it in some videos, but this seems different in that I have the D4 light flashing, sometimes the check engine light comes on, and the speedo, which was erratic for a couple days just quit completely. The car turned over 500,000 miles last week, and shifts and runs great. Today I swapped the VSS for a used one from a much younger car, but no change. It’s possible that the new used one is bad, but maybe the old one was good. I don’t know. I jumped the service connector, but I get no codes flashing at all. Any ideas?

I would get a good known vss and install it to see if the problem goes away.
Also check fluid level and condition.

What sort of flashing is the d4 giving you? Consistent flashes continuously? A pattern?
Try resetting it by disconnecting your battery overnight. (Really only takes 20 mins or so, but I find it easier to just do it overnight).
When the d4 light begins flashing, jump the connector (might want to make sure the connector doesn’t have issues of its own) and count the flash pattern.
D4 light generally indicates transmission issues and the SES light indicates motor/computer/electrical
