I just bought a 1992 Ford Crown Vic with 183,000 miles, has a new motor (4.6 with 50,000) put in at 150,000 so I want know what to expect repair wise. Engine hesitates at idle in drive (I’m thinking it’s a vacuum leak, but other than that it runs great and is mechanically sound. Just give me your thoughts guys.

It’s unusual for a 4.6 to be worn out at 150000 but I guess if it wasn’t maintained it’s possible. I have seen them with 500000 and still going strong.

You may be on to something with the vacuum leak. Check the rubber PCV “T” fitting at the back of the intake manifold. It’s a common place to fail.

It’s hard to answer this one. The 4.6 liter “modular engine” went through many different versions during its production cycle.

Since Ford varied the specifics of this engine for various models (as well as year-to-year changes), you first have to determine the source of your replacement engine. As an example, some 4.6’s suffered from high oil consumption due to bad valve-guide seals… while others developed cracks in the nylon composite intake manifold when Ford switched to a new supplier.

It’s very difficult to tell you what repairs you’ll be in for because that would likely be dependent on the way it was maintained and driven before you purchased it. Sure there are some pattern failures, but you don’t want to make assumptions in auto repair if you can avoid it. I often recommend a good mechanical inspection of a vehicle before purchase to get a clear idea of the vehicles condition before your buy it. I believe that’s the best way to determine the true value of the vehicle and also to assess it’s mechanical condition. More info here.

The car was owned by a friend of a friend, she treats her cars very well and does all the maintenance that the manual recommends. I’ll have to see if I can find what engine was put in. The hesitating is (mostly) gone now but every now and then a CEL light will come on at idle. I can’t pull the codes because of the dumb design Ford used on the connector. No oil leaks or blue smoke has been spotted, nothing leaks really.
