Greetings!
I have a 1992 Honda Accord LX, MT, with 164k miles. The SRS light has been on since I bought the car – it has just one airbag on the driver’s side. I was told by the previous owner that she had a new A/C system installed in the car, and in order to get that to work properly she installed a different ECU from the junkyard; and ever since then the SRS light has remained on for her.
When I went to my local Honda dealer to get pricing for having an alignment done, I asked about the SRS light and they told me that the diagnostic fee is around $125 to check the light, but if they find a defective component, then I wouldn’t pay anything for the diagnostic and repair since airbag components are under warranty for life. However, it seems to me like there’s a chance something other than a defective component could be the cause, particularly because of the ECU swap done before I owned the car. For what it’s worth, the previous owner left the old ECU in the car therefore I still have it.
I had heard and read online several places about a DIY method to reset the SRS indicator on these old Hondas. Has anyone successfully used this on a 4th gen Accord? If so where could I find an accurate description of the method for the Accord? Lastly, would it even be worthwhile to attempt this since I had left my car battery disconnected for more than a week to accomplish other repairs? Should I just take it to the dealer and let them diagnose knowing it seems to be sort of a gamble with having to pay for the diagnostic or not? Thanks for reading!
