Having a problem with my speedometer that I can’t seem to resolve, speedometer is “sticking”, and this problem seems worse in cool/cold weather. When I am driving the speedometer moves up, but seems to stick. Everyday I drive by this radar thing on the road, and it will display your cars speed, it will read my car at 50 mph but the speedometer will say 45, its almost always 5 mph off, if the radar reads 35, the cars speedometer reads 30 mph. I never really notice this problem when it is hot outside, but in the dead of winter this problem gets bad to the point the speedometer doesn’t want to move until the car is nice and hot. Any ideas, suggestions, comments will be appreciated!! Forgot to mention, everything else on the cluster works fine…

if the vehicle has a speed cable. probly a good idea to lube it up using graphite, if its really gummed up, it will need to be removed, cleaned and relubed with dry graphite.

This is a common problem and it’s not likely lubing the cable will fix it. My method of lubeing the cable is to remove the end from the transmission and pull the entire cable from the sleeve. I clean it, then lube it with silicone paste as I reinstall it. This usually makes them quieter and smoother but it won’t fix a problem inside the cluster. I suspect the mechanism in your dash is worn out and needs to be replaced. That said, it won’t have the correct mileage when you do. You’ll have to take your new speedo to a specialty shop and have it set to the correct odometer reading before you install it.

            Keep us posted.
