      Hi Eric,

I didn’t find the answer from your cooling system videos.

New radiator, new fans, new water pump; cooling system works except when after highway driving and let it idle for say 2 mins, the temperature rises above normal. It cools back down immediately when you raise the rpm to 1500 while idling. It looks like that the coolant is not circulating at idling speed. Could something be blocking the flow of the coolant that it only gets unblocked if the pump is operating at 1500+ engine rpm ?

      thanks,

      Sammy

as for a clog its very unlikely . it may be a bad thermostat but sounds like you have a blown head gasket . i had this happen to me it was a blown head gasket . i would not drive it till this is fix . you could be hurting the engine . let the car warm up with out the rad cap on it . then watch for bubbles . if you have bubbles then it would indicate that you are getting exhaust in your cooling system causing it to over heat . if that’s the case then there could be a blown head gasket , cracked or warped head . head is not properly tq to head causing this condition . good luck buddy.

Have you changed the thermostat? What is the year make model and mileage? I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions like a head gasket unless you have evidence

This will eliminate a few things at one time .

with all the cooling system work done. I would suggest
air in the cooling system.here is a video to help bleed the cooling
system.follow the procedure exactly like the video shows.exclude
the bleed screw and the no spill funnel.unless you have one.run the coolant
a little under the rad neck.so it does not spill all over.

+1. First thing to come to mind is air in the cooling system. This is the first thing to check for with any cooling system issue. I’m pretty sure that’s the issue with your vehicle based on your description.

I think it is the head gasket. I have to tap off a little bit of coolant every 3-4 days; and I see white smoke.

Is the white smoke in the cold morning or all the time?
you may be topping off from air being removed then coolant
                      needs to take its place.

It could have just been the early cold morning. I drove for about 14 miles highway; so I expected that there won’t be any white smoke due to the cold morning. But just checked again I don’t see the white smoke anymore.

Do you expect to see coolant coming out immediately once the bleeder is opened up ? I do see that. Does that mean that there is no air ?

The bleed screw is only used to fill the system not
bleed air. Just repeat the bleed procedure if necessary.;)
You could still have air.Once the over flow stays full when
checked when the car is cold. Then there is no more air.

Personally I don’t think it’s a head gasket issue, white smoke out the tail pipe is normal after all. Air in the cooling system is the #1 cause of overheats and is the first place I check. If you suspect a head gasket test for it and see what you get.

                              Just an update guys:

The behavior changed; at highway speed the temp goes up to about 3/4 of the gauge then cools down during idling.

It was the thermostat. Thermostat was the last suspect in my list since I have changed this 4 yrs ago. And all the thermostat failures I have experienced before (including other cars) resulted to the thermostat being left open all the time.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. At least I learned that there is a bleeder in the cooling system 🙂

Thanks for the update. I’m not a fan of the aftermarket thermostats for Honda’s as I often find they make it difficult to bleed the air out of the system. It’s my hope that you used an OE thermostat but even if you didn’t you’ll still need to bleed the air out of the system for a lasting repair.

Thanks for the update and for using the ETCG forum.
