Hello my mustang has started to backfire and feel like loss of power once started. It only use to do it when cold but now every time I start the car it seems to do this once running it is fine 99% of the time an occasional backfire when starting from stop in 1st gear. I changed the engine coolant sensor as I read this can be an issue. The car it is 26 yr old and other than the parts I changed I feel the others are original. I checked for vacuum leak with carb cleaner this weekend I will try the smoke method. Plugs and wires are about 1 yr old, I put a new distributer cap on about 6 month ago before this start happening. All vacuum lines are connected that I traced. Any ideas for me to look at would be great. Pulled codes only codes where from emissions as I disconnected my smog pump when it went bad.

      Thanks

Either lean mixture or timing incorrect . Since you replaced the distributer , I would look at the timing .

        God bless

Pull each of the spark plugs and check for fouling, proper gap, and signs of carbon tracks. Check each of the spark plug wires for correct resistance.

Thank you I will look at both the timing and plugs and wires

On an engine this old, another thing to look at would be the condition of the timing chain and gears. A slack chain/gear combo can mess up your valve timing somewhat, which could result in backfiring through the intake.

I wanted to reply with what I found was the issue. I checked and cleaned the MAF sensor all showed correct with voltages. I changed it anyway and now the car is running correctly even though the other MAF tested good. And appeared clean

If the old sensor tested good and appeared clean, it would be an interesting experiment to put it back on and see if the car still runs good, to see if perhaps there was some electrical connector pin issue that was cured by switching sensors.
