91 Civic H/B Compression Test

      w00t! Completed my first Compression test.
      Uhm…what do the results mean?

      Motor is D15B1.

      1
      D 162
      W 225

      2
      D 170
      W 220

      3
      D 152
      W 190

      4
      D 164
      W 180

      #1 sparkplug threads good
      #2 sparkplug threads slightly wet with oil
      #3 sparkplug threads wetter with oil
      #4 Sparkplug threads much wetter with oil (wettest of the 3)

      I did run the engine for about 5 minutes before the test, it was pretty cold out.

      I made some mistakes when trying to run the test.
      #1 Sparkplug socket has no groove for the bearing in the extension, so can remove the plugs but can’t replace them as the bearing doesn’t grip.
      #2 Under-tightened the adaptor for the compression quick connect hose, leaving the adaptor down inside the valve cover when I removed the hose. (crap!)
      (after 1/2 hour of intense thought)
      I resolved this by removing the O-ring on the hose brass section and screwing into the adapter tightly, but not too much, then unscrewing.

      I tried to use 10w40 motor oil for the test but the oil can wouldn’t work so I used ATF.
      Will this cause me any difficulties?

        It means your compression is good, but there is some wear on your rings. Personally I feel anything about 150 is good, although I like to see numbers 180-190.

          To reinstall the plugs take a piece of 3/8 fuel line about 6 inches long , stick the top of the plug in one end then you can stick into the hole and thread it in by hand. this helps avoid cross threading. once they are seated by hand use the spark plug socket w/ long extension ( if the socket falls of the extension a small strip of duct tape should keep it held on )

            Number 3 is a little off but anything over 150psi like third gear said should be fine on that.

              All is OK with compression, cool.

              I’ll change the valve cover gasket and sparkplug tube seals for the oil on plug threads issue.

              Is a leak down test usefull at this point or do the decent compression numbers make performing this test as not really needed?

                To me the leakdown test is just a diagnostic tool to pinpoint why there is bad compression. For instance, is it leaking out the intake or exhaust vales, etc. If your compression is good (which I think yours is), I don

                  You don’t have to do a leak down test if your compression is fine but, you can if you want and have the tool.

                    Actually I just use the hose for the compression tester after I remove the schrader valve so you don’t really need the tool, I show how in this video but as stated it really doesn’t sound like you’re going to get any useful information from doing this as what I’m seeing looks like normal wear for that engine and nothing to worry about in my opinion.
