I recently purchased a 91′ Chevy Van G30. Yesterday everything was fine and gave no indication that there was a problem. Today I go to drive it and it won’t go into any gear. What ever gear I put it in it jest revs like it is in park. I checked the transmission fluid and it is fine. I checked the linkage and it seams to be in working order. At this point I am lost. I was wondering if there is something I am missing before I send it back to the dealership.

Check the fluid with the van off (I know, but there is a reason) and note the level. Now start it up and re-check with it in park and neutral noting the level. If there is no change than the pump in the trans has most likely gone bad.

Usually when a vehicle goes from driving and shifting fine to nothing in any gear the fluid pump has failed.

The above is a great test to see if it’s a pump problem. It could also be a problem with the manual valve linkage inside the transmission. Either way, you’re most likely looking at an overhaul or replacement transmission unfortunately. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you Raistian and Eric. It looks like there was a change in the level from neutral to off, maybe 1/2 inch on the dip stick. I did notice that the fluid level was way to high (about 2 inches higher than it should have been). Any chance that could be causing the problem? Would it be worth pulling the pan off and checking to see if the filter is clogged?

It can’t hurt to pull the pan off. It may be a shot in the dark but it’s worth a try.
