Hello All, been a follower of ETCG’s YouTube videos and did a few DIY repairs based off of those videos. A big thank you to Eric.

Currently, I am working on a 91 Honda Accord SE with auto trans, about 117,000 miles. Noticed fouled spark plugs with some oil residue in the spark plug wells. Proceeded to replace the O-rings under the rocker assembly along with the gaskets on the top side as well as the valve cover. No problems there but when it came time to do the valve adjustments before putting the valve cover back on, I encountered quite a few seized adjustment screws. I am not talking about loosening the tappet adjusting nuts, I could get those loose. But even with those loose, I could not turn clockwise or counterclockwise the tappet adjusting screw. 7 out of 8 on the exhaust side display this problem. 1 out of 8 on the intake side. To my knowledge, the valves have never been adjusted before.

After taking the rocker assembly off the car, I had attempted to use PB Blaster on one of the adjusting screws on the exhaust side with no luck. I removed the nut all together and used a propane torch on that screw to heat it up, hoping to get it loose and buy replacement ones. Even after heating it, I could not get that screw to budge in either direction. Any advice on getting that screw to budge or does it look like I need to start replacing the affected rocker arms? If so, anyone have a guide or link on taking apart the rocker assembly and putting it back together? Much appreciated!

Thanks Raistian77, sounds like you’re thinking the same thing I am which is to replace the arms at this point.

I did some research and it seems once those things have seized they get destroyed when trying to force them apart. I would probably do the same and replace them.

You can try this, I have a hot plate and soup pan here in the shop. With something like that I would try soaking it in hot oil or solvent for awhile and seeing if that helps free them up. I prefer using plain old Dextron ATF.

A little impacting may help. Someone may have overtightened the nuts and driven the screw threads up in tension. If you put a little something to keep the rocker arm from going down, and you tap a bit on the screw head they might just free up.

Another possibility is to leave things alone, if the exhaust valves have any clearance at all. If they’re tight, you do have to adjust them. But if they have even half the spec clearance they’re probably good for another 60,000 miles.

Thanks, those are great ideas. I’ll try tapping the screw head to see if I get lucky. Maybe soaking them in hot solvent. But the exhaust valves definitely have no clearance.
