hey guy i have an 89 ranger i am working on it has the 2.3 4 cylinder with duel plugs it set for years till i replaced the fuel pump then it ran fine till 2 weeks later when the rear abs valve clogged up and locked up the rear brakes it then set for another 6 months to 1 year when i decided to work on it again i bypassed the rabs valve and got the back brakes working again. when i went to start it up it would not start for a while. well i finally got it to start but it ran and idled very bad. so i decided to check the plugs the plugs were old and worn so i put brand new plugs and wires in. then started it again it started after a couple of tries but still idles bad if you let it set there and idle after a few minutes it will just die but will start right back up. if it is worm after a few minutes it will not die but you can hear the idle get really bad at that point you can rev it up and it will idle ok again for another few minutes when it will start idling bad again rinse and repeat i did that for an hour last night. i checked for vacuum leaks with starter fluid and found no leaks please help i am sorry for the long description just wanted to give you all i could

When you try to start it and it does not start. You are still
adding fuel to the cylinders. That would explain the bad/rough idle
when started. Check for a good spark with a tester.see if this link
        helps further.

Does it still have the old gas in it? If so you might need to run it through and replace it with new gas. Gas doesn’t store well, and if it sits for long enough it will no longer be combustable. Your problem may be a simple as the fuel being used.

so just an update yes it had the old gas in it about 1/4 of a tank i thought about that when it would not start so i put about 7 gals of new gas in it. after letting it run and baby setting it for 1 hour before bed when i turned it off it was still running bad when i got home today after work i started it and it ran 100% better like magic the shop ferries fixed it over night ha ha so if any one has any idea about that i would love to here it because i still can believe it.
