      Hey guys.
My mom has a 89 dodge dakota with a lower end knock.

She had the engine rebuilt a few years ago.The man who built it told her to bring it back after 500miles so he could go back threw it and check everything.

Well she didn – She drove it 800miles and it started kocking and had no oil psi so she parked it. (She tryed to get back in contact with the man who rebuilt it but she could find him)

Well she parked it for 3 years. she was gona junk it but i offered her what she had in it 1800 for the rebuild.
I was gona rebuild it for my self but now im just gona rebuild it and give it to my brother for competing school.

      Its got a 3.9 v6.

I pulled the engine today and coulden get the torque convertor bolts off soo i pulled the engine with the torque convertor steal on the engine… When i got the motor out i was checking everything and found the torque convertor and a 1 to 1 1/2 play to it (The bolts wear lose) I literally unscrewed them by hand.

I started thinking this could have been the knocking.

I’m pretty confused. Where is the noise coming from? Is it definitely from the trans?

I’m also confused as I’m not sure where you’re going with this. If you didn’t have fluid in the trans why not fill it up and recheck it?

Ok let me resay it all.
Sorrry guyss been verry tied working 60+ hours taking care of my new son and helping my bro with this truck.
When I pulled the motor I pulled the tq with it.
Now i have got the engine back and and everything seems fine with the motor (Running good oil pressure and have been driving for a few days)

When I reinstalled the engine. I forgot to add fuild to the tq.(The old fuild ran out when I pulled the engine)

Soo I filled the trans to what the book said it should be with a complete service.

The fluid leave is perfect but when I put the truck in gear I head a grinding/hisssing noise.
Only when at a complete stop. I dont even have to touch the gas (Just release the break and let the truck roll and the noise goes away)

We dont smell anything like something overheating or such.

Hears the deal. He completed his school and a place in Fargo ND has hired him on starting at 19$a hour and has paid him 2000$ to relocate but they only give him part of the money at a time. They sent him 600 yesterday. We used that to fix something. The rest we have to use to get there.

We are not 100% sure about this truck even tho it runs good. But he steal wants to go. (He said he will use the buss if it comes down to it) The place he is going to work for is paying for him a motel for 2 weaks.

Soo our plane is for me to haul him and the truck up to Fargo and let him drive this truck from and to work until he gets the rest of the money to buy a good used truck.

The realy sucky part is we leave to marrow at midnight after iv worked a 12 hour day.

we are aware this thing could just bit the dust after setting all theses years but he wants to try (And you got to admire that)

He is my bro and my best friend and iv given this everything i got. soo any advise.? about what this noise is?

Well, you didn’t give any more info regarding the problem(s) with the truck. I’m not sure what to tell you bud.

Ok let me try this one more time.

When i put the truck in gear there is a hissing or grinding noise (Only in Gear) and goes away the moment the truck starts to roll.

To me i sound like a clutch (two disk rubbing together)

                The trans is full.

                The trans shifts fine.

The noise is not there when in park or N.

Wear the hell is Dreamer and Eric!!!!!!!

How does the fluid look now in the transmission?

Hissing noises could be a vacuum leak or hot leaking fluid.

It sounds like it may be an internal transmission fault if you are hearing a grinding noise unfortunately.

I would start by double checking the fluid the correct way(see owners manual) and possible dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter.

I am at a loss too without seeing the vehicle. You could also do a Google search on the noises and see what that yields.

I personally have not experienced anything like that but to be honest with all the work you’ve done there it’s probably not a bad idea to go back and check everything to be sure it’s all hooked up correctly. If the trans or torque converter was starved for fluid it could mean that damage resulted and you would need to replace one or both of those parts to cure the noise if you don’t find something simple with your installation.
