Been watching ETCG for a while now thought I’d come over and see if you guys could help me. First off the truck, 89 C1500 5.7tbi rwd 700r4. Now the problem, truck dies at redlights. It has been doing this since I bought the truck 3 years ago. I recently had some trouble with the fuel pump and in the process of diagnosing that(hole in the hose between pump and assembly) I decided to try and fix the dying at redlights. I have removed the throttle body and cleaned it, replaced fuel pressure, and regulator replaced IAC. I removed the egr and cleaned it wasn’t that dirty and moved like it should have. When it is sitting idling i can work the diaphragm on the egr and it stumbles or dies, so I don’t think it is egr.

Before the fuel pump problem the only code that would pop up was for the vss, I need to replace mine been driving it for two and half years with no speedo. Since I replace the pump I’m getting two more codes. One for the cts another for the map sensor. The codes are:

15 Coolant temperature sensor signal indicates a temperature colder than -27° F for 30 seconds after the engine has been running for at least 30 seconds.

24 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit.

34 MAP sensor signal voltage was too low (high vacuum) when engine speed was under 1200 RPM or the engine speed was over 1200 RPM with a throttle position angle above 21%.

When I was diagnosing the fuel pump I could unhook the map sensor and get the truck to idle, hook it back up it would die, Lean condition. I also tested the resistance on the cts and all seemed fine at the time. Now I’m stuck. What do you guys think is causing the dying issue?

see if this helps. if you tested the cts and the ohms were good.
Then check the wiring and connector.

First of all without the PCM knowing the vehicle speed it doesn’t know what to do with the IAC as well as the transmission operation. I would start there. The coolant temp problem sounds like a bad coolant temp sensor or a wiring/PCM problem. The MAP code could be caused by the stalling problem and would check to see if the code returns after the other problems are repaired before addressing it.

I was just sitting here thinking about it and I don’t think I did a reset after I put the new fuel pump in. That may well be the cause of my map and cts code. I get paid tomorrow and was planning on putting a new speed sensor on. After that I’ll do a reset and drive it around for awhile and report back if it worked.

+1 on the VSS possibly causing the issue. As pointed out if the computer doesn’t know you stopped it won’t bump the idle up.

Keep us posted as to how things go after the speed sensor replacement.
