hello all, new user long time tech and fan of ETCG. That being said i am seeking some advice on my truck. It is a 1989 c1500 standard cab standard bed,2wd 300hp 5,7 and an nv4500. The rear end i am unsure of since the gu code has been worn off from the inside of the glove compartment. now the issue at hand, it clunks in the rear when i engage the clutch from a dead stop or if i leave it in gear and rock the truck forward and backward. its also got a good vibration at around 75mph my first though was the u joints so replaced them and the vibration and clunking stopped for one trip to work about 30 miles, on the way home it stated again. im stuck believing that it is either the pinion bearings or maybe the carrier where the rod slides through to hold the spider gears in. has any body ever run across a problem like this? I know it could possibly be the carrier bearings but due to the sound its leading more towards one of the latter.

100% Certain it is from the rear end? I know a busted Transmission Mount (And Motor mounts, since you say its when you drop the clutch, putting a lo0ad on the engine, transmission, and differential at the same time) can cause a pretty good racket. That was the problem on my 83 c1500.

Has it always made this sound since you have owned it, or is it a recent development?

Yes I have checked the transmission it’s self as well as the mounts and the motor mounts, flywheel bolts axel tube u bolts and even the leaf spring hardware. And yes it has done it since I got it. I almost thought for a while there that maybe the PO put a set of gears in and didn’t shim it right or something

It sounds as though you may be on the right track with the differential then. I’m not that knowledgeable when it comes to specifics in there – I just know how to do things I’ve had to do on my truck. Let us know what you end up doing, or finding!

The vibration you are talking about though sounds like it could be a dent in the driveline. You said you already replaced the UJoints, so it may be possible that it got dented in that process. (Though, it could just be a tire balance issue, as well.)

I had thought of a dinged drive line as well and I meant to put in my previous post that the drive line didn’t have any damage and still had its weights attached to it. If it ever stops freaking snowing I’m going to pull the cover and do some ‘spectin in there

Ok well checked the pinion end play, couldn’t be more than 2 or 3 thou if that. Fluid is full. Jacked up the rear of the truck and put it in gear at idle in third when I engage and disengage the clutch I can hear the notable sound of gears meshing, that leads me to further believe that the play is some where around those spider gears. Hopefully the shaft or one of the shims. I really don’t want to replace the entire carrier if I don’t have to

Well the rear is toast, it started grinding and clunking and whirring on the way home from work. I think it was the inner pinion bearing that went
