I have a 1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS with 5 speed tranny. After i start the car ( engine is stone cold ) when i start accelarating it jerks when the rmps get past 2000 and the check engine light comes on. It seems to have a 18 pin connector harness so can someone reccomend a code reader that will fit? Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

On the 88 there is nothing to plug in. I can’t remember for sure but you either pull back the carpet on the passenger floor board to view the inspection hole for the computer LED OR it’s under the passenger seat. Either way all you need to do is find access to the red LED and turn the key to the ON position and it will give you the codes via flashing the LED. I don’t know if the webmaster has them in yet but we are incorporating Honda OBDI codes into the site as I type this so do a search for Honda OBDI and see what you come up with after you get the codes.

I’d be looking at the ignition system based on your description. Is it fuel injected or carbureted?

Yes it is in the passender floorboard under the carpet. I will get that code and check. It is fuel injected and it is now jerking wether the motor is at operating temp or stone cold. I feel it is a fuel/ignition/emission problem but not sure. What do you think?

Pull the code and start with that. One step at a time, lets not get ahead of ourselves. BTW we are almost done with the Honda OBDI stuff but in case it’s not up when you pull the code just post it here and I’ll let you know what it’s for.

The error code the ECU is giving me is a Code 9. Which my service manual tells me it is the cyl sensor. I have also noticed motor oil slightly inside the distributor cap. Must be leaking past the oring within the distributor so i know i nee to replace that. Think I should just go ahead and replace that Cyl sensor?

#Do you know where i might be able to find this sensor part #37841-PK2-026 ? I can’t find anyone who can get it.

I just ‘Googled’ that part number and came up with this –

                http://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/honda~sensor~assy~37841-PK2-026.html

I am a fan of troubleshooting rather than just replacing parts.

                Id suggest a FSM 🙂

I have been using THE honda factory service manuel and went through the troubleshooting flowchart. I think i have fixed the problem. Got to testdrive it to make sure.
