My 1988 dodge Dakota SPFI v6 (110,000 miles roughly) slams into drive from park(and same with reverse) like it is getting hit from the rear. Once in gear it shifts great for a 31 year-old truck. The truck has good u-joints and the engine is MECHANICALLY solid but I am still fighting the electrical parts. It doesn’t have a tachometer so I don’t know what rpm it idles at but it seems high. Many of my buddies either say it’s something with idle/throttle control sensors but they honestly didn’t know the difference from there head and there a**.

It is highly possible the slamming is coming because of the high idle. Imagine shifting into gears while holding the revs high it can cause an unintended jerk and noise on any vehicle.

Apart from that, you can check the engine and transmission mounts too. If the noise is coming from the rear check the rear differential bushings too.

I replaced my IAC (Idle air controller) and the problem is still present. What else could be the problem.

Did you check for vacuum leaks?
