got an 87 CRX Si, 255,000 miles, runs really well. i’m in portland, oreg.
i usually get ~23 mpg this time of year, up to 30mpg in the summer, mostly city
driving. out of nowhere, the mileage has fallen to 13mpg.
i check compression, all cylinders around 150psi,
ran a bottle of injector cleaner in a tank of gas.
made sure plugs are gapped & rotor/cap are clean, good plug wires.
fuel filter was changed awhile back. don’t see any leaks anywhere.
timing seems to be ok, adjusted valves w/ engine cold last week.
i don’t see any gas dripping anywhere, but maybe i need to look harder.

any1 have any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this?

tires properly inflated? wheel alignment good? check
for sticky brakes and rolling resistance.your engine
may be full of carbon. You can take it to a shop to have
your injectors cleaned.(recommended) or you can try it yourself.
        here are some methods.

I had that exact same car, a black one. I loved it. The 87 didn’t have a very good monitoring system and therefore we used to replace the O2 sensors about every 60K as something of a ‘maintenance’ item. A ‘lazy’ O2 can cause poor gas mileage. I’d recommend you start by replacing the O2 sensor if you’ve already replaced the tune up components.

i’ll take it out & have a look at it… its hard to get parsts 4it sometimes,
cuz of the age. original D15A3 motor. starting to leak at body seams in
the hatch area…silicone caulk is my fiend…hahaha

It’s not leaking at the body seams, it’s likely the tail light gaskets. Remove them and replace them and see if the leak is still there.

O2 sensors are easy to find. It’s only a single wire, you could probably go aftermarket and be just fine.

              Don’t call me old. 🙂

thanks eric.. i got a bosch aftermarket o2 sensor for $17. old 1 came out easily, thank god.
i removed the taillights, cleaned everything & siliconed them back in place. i removed interior sidepanel plastic & can see where water is coming in. i removed hatchback & put RTV on hinges. after 27 years, water gets in the smallest little places. this might be a good video…

ps: if u r broke & ur car is broke, a trip to U-PullIt makes a lot of sense..perhaps a future vid?? thanks again, appreciate your help…

That is a common problem on older Honda’s. The gears in the cluster wear out. It might account for the ‘decrease’ in fuel mileage. Thanks for the update and keep us posted if things change.
