      Hello all! I own a 1986 Ford F – 150 XLT Lariat. l6 4spd.

This summer, the truck began to make a noise, after i let out the clutch into second gear It would make a clicking noise. This noise sounded like it was coming from the back. Now that the weather is much much colder it has grown worse. I will accelerate a bit before letting off the clutch and it’ll sound like a continuous clicking for a few seconds, like the sound of having a baseball card clothespinned to a bicycle tire almost. But a tad more metallic sounding. Will do this in third also if i accelerate hard, not in 4th though. Also has gotten a little sluggish in 3rd when it’s cold, more than likely related to the problem aforementioned.

Is this a rear differential noise? Input and help appreciated!!!

if you suspect its your differential a good way to check the diff for damage is to check the fluid, if you find metalics in the oil lubricating the differential like metal flakes, also the transmission should not be over looked, something may be going on there…

If you jack up one rear wheel and support with a jack stand you should be able to turn the wheel by hand to check for looseness in the drive train. Could be universal joint or some other less expensive problem so as you turn the wheel by hand watch the whole drive train up to the transmission.
