I just got this car from the original owner and have known the car since I was the first one in the passenger seat on May 20th 1983. Since new the oil gauge read low once warmed up. I see a lot of stuff on line about this problem in Fords but wonder if anyone had the definitive answer. This car has been babied, given whatever it needed, and hasn’t seen snow or rain in 25 years. It has a bit over 70,000 miles on it. It is now put away for winter and so I won’t be able to put a real gauge on it till spring. I am not too talented but know my way around a car and own several, a Studebaker, two DeSotos, a K-based convertible and my driver of an ultra-modern 1990 Reatta.

Has anyone here had this same problem with the Ford V6?

      Thanks and Happy Motoring,
      J

Was it the gauge or the sending unit replaced? All you can do it put a mechanical
gauge on it when it wakes up for spring. I have not heard of any oil pressure problems.

This is common across all electric sending unit oil pressure gauges in 80’s cars. The sending units and gauges were crap. This is why manufacturers went away from gauges and went to idiot lights – because consumers are too sensitive about the reading of the gauges and don’t know how to interpret what they are seeing anyway. Also since engines are no longer “repaired” at the dealer level should a low oil pressure condition cause a failure there’s just no point in dealing with the customer service side of gauge reading complaints. When the engine grenades it’s just going to get replaced wholesale anyway. Remember parts are cheap – labor is expensive.
