Hello everyone, i have this problem with my 1989 toyota cressida that is just kicking my butt. I bought this car with a blown head gasket, and it ran even at that. After the teardown and repair, we put (almost) everything back together and now it will not run at all unless u hold the gas. Even there, it runs kinda rough. I will note that we did not install the alternator or radiator or ac belts because we just wanted to verify that the car runs, which it doesn’t. Please help me. Thanks in advance!

Did you reinstall the timing belt properly?

From what i can understand and from my knowledge, yes. After re installing the timing belt, i stuck a long screwdriver in the #1 spark plug hole and turned the crank to zero. The screwdriver was all the way up and the lines were lined up on the cam pulleys and the timing cover. As far as the distributor, i am not sure if it is lined up right.

Sounds like it isnt installed properly….line up the crank mark and then see if the cam marks line up…i would start there.

Was the distributor removed? check that the rotor points to
#1 on the distributor and the timing marks due line up.

Would a vacumn leak cause this? I discovered that there is a vacumn line underneath the intake manifold that is right under but not nearly pushed onto the manifold… I don’t know if this is the culprit or not but i do hear a noise like a very high pitched turbo sound when revving.. Also the fuel light is on.

If its a big enough line especially manifold vacuum.
The car will run bad and may stall.Reconnect it and recheck
                      the symptoms.

Just an update, good and bad news. The good news is that the vacumn line that was not connected was a major vacumn line. And i got it connected now. The bad news is that the car still won’t run ! I am truly stomped. Please help !

There isn’t much good I can do for you over the computer. Check you firing order did you disconnect the plug wires? this is the 4 banger right??

Yes. I did check the firing order.

Not much I can tell you to do except double check your work. It the car ran before and now it wont, this means it must be because of something you did or didn’t do. You could have overlooked something, sleep on it and you might find the problem.

i know this is rudimentary, but have you tested the fuel system? i had a taurus that wouldn’t run after starting cause the fuel pump was shot. spraying starter fluid into the duct before the throttle kept it running. swapping the pump and filter got it on the road. (FYI, i’m halfway through school, i do work on cars outside of school with my buddy who’s got 7 ase’s, so i’m not the most knowledgeable, just trying to contribute) B)
