61 Falcon Ranchero. 170 Cu In Trying to test out my C4 Transmission. The Stater I bought from AutoZone isn’t syncing with the torque converter. It makes that shrilling noise every time. I noticed the torque converter is worn. would that have any effect? I will try tomorrow when I wake up to put it at Top Dead Center and try again. And Also try putting it in neutral since I cannot put it in park since I don’t have the linkage. It won’t click into park. It was able to lock into park when it wasn’t bolted on the engine. I am not sure this would have any effect since I don’t have a neutral safety switch and I don’t have the drive shaft or yoke in since I need to buy both. I am able to hand crank it. If the case that I cannot crank the engine, is it possible to purchase a fly wheel to put over the torque converter without having to buy a new torque converter? What are everyones thoughts? anything else I can try? Thanks

I don’t recall Ford using starter shims as much as GM did. That said it could be the wrong starter or a fatly one by the sound of it. You might also check the ring gear. Sometimes the welds break and allow it to spin freely. If it does require shims, this might help.
It did not require shims at all, it started with out an issue after bolting it on tighter. The problem was there was a bit of a warp in the flex plate. So I used my air rachet at 125 psi and starts up every time without an issue. no more shrilling. I did watch your video on that last night. I will post a youtube link of it running.

Crack in the Manifold is why your hearing a pop
If the ring gear is worn the starter will have a hard time engaging. Since that vehicle didn’t come with a C-4 Trans it’s possible the starter is incompatible with that ring gear. The diameter or number of gear teeth could be different. You might need to use a starter from a later model with an inline 6.
