Own a 61 Ranchero with a 170 i6, c4 auto. Could anyone throw there 2 cents in or share me some in-site on what can possibly be the outcomes of upgrading from a 7.25 rear end differential to an 8.8? are ford differentials a universal swap? My worries are my trips at picknpull and keep questioning myself “Will it fit?” Thanks.

see if this helps. To upgrade to the 8.8 nothing is usable from
the 7.25 You would have to find a four lug 8.8 entire diff/rear

I once owned a Maverick with the 170 – not exactly a powerhouse. So, I can’t see this as an upgrade if you plan to stay with the 170 cubic inch motor. All you are doing is adding weight to the vehicle. The rear axle is already overbuilt for that engine.

My 1970 Maverick had a three speed manual and optional AM radio. Actually it was rather fun to drive once I had radial tires on it. Put it in 1st gear and floor board it, 2nd gear and floor board it, third gear and floor board it until up to speed. I drove it 146,000 miles that way and never hurt the engine, clutch, transmission or rear end. According to Ford the wheel HP was 39.

If this is your hobby and you like doing this stuff then go for it but like I said, not needed.
