My 61 Ranchero has a blown head on cylinder 6. exhaust gases escape from a tiny gap, loosing compression. its in the middle not near the oil passages or coolant . my question is after checking for any warpage or cracks, is it safe to replace the gasket? my oil and coolant looks good

As long as the cylinder head is flat, no cracks or burns you should be good to go with the gasket replacement. Just be sure everything is clean (including the bolt threads) and it’s torqued correctly.

In this weather you might freeze to death.

There’s no alignment pins so I’d look for a couple of long studs with the correct thread. Also, check for flatness and look over the valve train while the head is off. Ford used rubber umbrella valve seals back then but the plastic ones were better.
