I’ve always used 6 point box combination wrenches. However, I go to look for some tools for myself and all I see are 12 point box wrenches. You have to special order 6 point box.

I’ve really like the 6 point box because you’re less likely to strip the head of a bolt. (Bolt head has 6 sides, wrench has 6 sides. Unless you’re not dealing with hex bolts, but that’s very rare.)

Besides being more readily available. What’s the advantage of a 12 point box? Are you really more likely to strip the head of a bolt with them?

If you’re in a tight space the 12 point can come in handy as you only need to move a point or two rather than a whole side.

6 point best for breaking torque or rusty nuts or bolts
12 point best for speed like what was already said they sometimes just fit the space better but they are more likely to strip bolt heads then a 6 point

However 6 point are sometimes more expensive then 12 point variety but like eric has said the one place you don’t want to cheap out on are your hand tools

I think I’m just going to go ahead and get the 6 point then. Most of the work I do involves drain plugs and bumpers. haha

I have nightmares about rounding off bolts… haha

                I choose 6-point every chance I get.

As far as sockets… I see no point in EVER using a 12-point.

                I always use 6-point sockets.

I agree that for sockets always use a 6 point. Why you’d need to use anything else with a modern high-tooth count ratchet is beyond me unless you have a 12pt fastener. For wrenches I think it depends on the quality of your wrench. I’d use a surface drive snap-on 12pt any day, but I don’t have any so I choose my 6pt raised panel Craftsman before my 12pt C-man’s. If there’s a clearance issue I’ve HAD to use a 12 pt wrench, so I see the value in having both
