I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about the sockets that are on the market. What do you guys on the forum think about having and using both 6 and 12 point sockets in your toolbox? I understand that both 6 point and 12 point wrenches are both very useful and have their place. Depending on the tool box, a tech could fill up a fair bit of their box with just sockets. Especially if they have both 6 and 12 point sockets in both chrome and impact versions in every drive size, in both metric and SAE to be ready for every possible situation.

I have Snap-On 12pt impact drive line wobble sockets. That is because they are 12pt bolts and are normally put in with1/2″ impacts on ourdrive shafts even though you are supposed to torque them. So to take them out you need those sockets. As for putting them in I start them by hand run them close with the impact then torque them. Whats really fun is when someone strips one or snaps the head off…

My 12pts are for 12pt heads only. My 8pt are for 8pt and 4pt only.

We need e-torx in impact for head bolts and exhaust manifolds/pipes all because some engineer out there has never done mechanics and thinks they are a good idea. This is also my opinion of triple squares for anything larger then a 10mm hex head.

Do they make Square head impacts, ? NOT chrome 8 points. I am digging the whole square concept and hope we see more on cars in the future. Nice think about a square bolt if you round it off, you can always get the BFH out and pound something else on it..LOL.

Snap-On does not make 8pt impact I asked specifically.

            Grey Pneumatic makes:

            3/8″ 4pt – http://www.gpsocket.com/products/category.phtml/impact_socket_sets/3_8/#4_point
            1/2″ 4pt – 1308P
            1/2″ 8pt – 1311S Standard
            1/2″ 8pt – 1311SD Deep
            3/4″ 4pt – (Budd Sockets)
            3/4″ 8pt – Deep and Standard
            1″ 4pt – (Budd Sockets)
            1″ 8pt – Standard and Deep

Thank you button you just made my tool list longer….. At least I have the1″ drive stuff already.

I have *havent actually counted lately* about 5 sets of both 6pt and 12pt sockets up to 2″/36mm. I also have 3 sets of inverted torx, and about 500+ random other sockets. All total *just guessing* I have over 20k+ in sockets alone. Every tool I own has its place, weather I use it once a day or once a decade. I mostly use 6pt’s as they handle the torque better and dont generally round off a bolt.

ya i have everything from 4mm up to 2 1/2″ skipping 3/4″ drive. I didn’t think I would need them with me getting the 1″ drive stuff I have and now…. It is all good I still don’t have a 3/4″ Impact I am sure There is like $2k+ easy in 3/4″ impact wrench, sockets, accessories I will end up buying. Right now as it stands I am right around $5-6k on sockets and extensions alone.
