I drive a 1987 Toyota pickup 5 speed 4X4 and noticed my transmission was making horrible noises almost like the gears were making a whirling noise. It makes this noise in every gear except for 4th. The truck drives fine and shifts through the gears without problems. Now the most recent problem that has come up is it will occasionally kick me out of first gear. Drained the transmission oil and found that the oil had metal shavings but no huge chunks of metal not sure what is causing this noise but it keeps getting louder makes me concerned to drive it. any help would be great don’t have the money to rebuild or replace transmission.

The combination of noise and metal shavings is probably not good news, sounds like something internal may be failing or has already failed. Noises are hard to diagnose over the internet, so it could be something else, and I’m not sure why it disappears in 4th since the symptoms sound like a bearing.
Are the shavings long and thin?
