So, about every other week, my check engine light comes on and has rough idle. But then it goes off a few days later or a week later and the truck runs fine. When it’s at idle, it will sound like it’s shutting off but then right before it sounds like it’s going to stall, something clicks and the power drains in all the lights because they go dim for a quick second, then the idle comes backup for a few seconds. It’s only does it on idle. Even after I’ve been driving it. Doesn’t take off really good either whenever this happens. Burns ALOT of oil too when this happens. But like I said, when the check engine light goes off after about a week, all this stops and she runs fine. Has plenty of power too.

I would check your alternator to see if it is charging properly next time it plays up.

          Ha thanks for the Thank!

Anyways, the alternator is newish. It charges fine because the battery doesn’t die and the volts stay normal.

What code(s) when the engine light is on?

I don’t have a code reader and haven’t had anyone read the codes. Been too busy working. Plan to go to Midas? to get it checked soon. If a code reader is cheap I could get one, there’s a NAPA by my house, also a Pepboys and AAP.

For around $25 you can get one that will connect to a smartphone by bluetooth or to a PC/laptop by USB.

I’ll look into that. But if this is a major problem, why doesn’t the check engine light just stay on? It seems like the truck will fix itself but then it’ll break again. Then fix it, then break and so on. It’s a VERY confusing truck.

Check the codes or have them checked. If at all possible, record this when it happens so that we can see what’s going on.
