New to me 03 montero sport. Has all wheel drive and a shifter for 4H and 4L. Previous owner said they had not used 4×4 in years.

I was reading that is somewhat common and people had luck lubricating something. But I have not found further details ok how or what to lubricate.

      Anyone have ideas?

Start with the shifter itself, remove the cover and boot to gain access to the mechanics.
Suggest you inspect the linkages for rust or binding and lube all moving points.

Also, I do not know if this may apply in your case…
On my 4X4 to shift ranges you have to be in neutral with your foot on the brake or the shifter will not move.

i’m with nightflyr here except i check the linkage first. it’s location under the vehicle traps moisture and debris and the linkage gets packed with dirt (most common) or rusts, especially if it’s not used.
