99 Pontiac Grand Prix, non supercharged 3.8, 4T65E transmission.

I’m trying to put the transmission back together and I’m running into the same issue with trying to torque down the channel plate to the case. The screws will not torque to the spec I’ve been given and it feels like I’m just twisting the screws down well beyond their tensile yield. The spec I’ve been given is 18 lb ft per factory service info provided through Identifix.

I broke or bottle necked, or stretched all the original screws. When I replaced them all, even the new ones felt like they were being twisted again so I drilled and helicoiled the six affected holes. No change in feel and still can’t achieve torque. The channel plate gaskets I was sent are metal with raised veins in them and wondered about how they might be affecting how the screws clamp down so I replaced them again with paper gaskets and I still can’t achieve torque. Can somebody tell me what I’m missing or doing wrong?

      Thanks in advance.

The spec should be in INCH pounds, if it doesn’t, it’s wrong.

Thank you. As soon as I read that, I had no clue why I didn’t consider that to be a possibility from the start. I chose the right screen name! I found the right specs elsewhere and the magic number was 106 inch pounds.
