I have a 1996 chevy k1500 with 236000 miles on the originaly tranny….. lately it has had issues shifting from park. after doing a little research I figured it was the brake safety switch. So I tried to disable only find out that the original owner had already done so.

In trying to get it to shift I accidentally broke the shift mechanism on the column, I got a new one at the salvage yard. I have tried many things including rocking it back and forth and hooking it up to another truck to pull the tension off of my truck and still nothing it will not shift. so I popped the cable off the transmission and the shifter moves fine. which to me means that it has to be something with the transmission. does anyone know how I should deal with it???

it my opinion if I am going to have to have the tranny pulled apart I almost may as well have it rebuilt or have a new one put in it just because of the miles. what do you guys think?

You might want to get some estimates on repair vs replace with used transmission, vs. rebuild. I’m not sure if the transmission needs to be removed to fix the shift lever. But I suspect it does.

You could always drop the man and see it there’s anything to see. From googling around, you should be able to see most of the mechanism without removing anything more. Everything should be free moving.

If your transmission fluid is clean use an exceedingly clean or new catch pan to avoid replacing most of the fluid. Assuming you can drain it without catching a pile of dirt.

Those transmissions are VERY common in 90s GM products. If you go the route, any decent transmission shop should be able to properly advise you on the best approach. How much money you want to spend is up to you if it replacement is the best recourse.

I towed it to a reputable transmission shop today. I dont feel like I could of kept it as clean as it would need to be plus this way if I cant fix it I am not putting fluid back in it just to have it not work. that would be a good idea though if I knew a little more

for anyone that may have been wondering, what had happened was that the shift linkage had worn out on the inside of the transmission. because it was wore out it aloud the linkage to move from where it should have been and it got caught on a lip inside the transmission, this is why it would not shift out of park. I have not seen the exact setup it has but this makes sense.

they tried to replace it without pulling the transmission but they decided that they would not beable to. So we both agreed to just have them pull the transmission and rebuild it while they were in there. the transmission to my knowledge didnt have any major issues with it, I do know that the 1-2 shift seemed soft and it made kind of a whistle sound sometimes when shifting from 1-2. kind of like when liquid is being pushed through a small space or restricted space if that makes any sense.

My other thought was that with 230, some odd thousand miles it probably wouldnt hurt, plus it would hopefully be good insurance for later. he quoted me $1200 to do it which I didnt think was to bad.

1200 for the rebuild is reasonable IMO. Most of the tranny guys in our shop quote around 2000 to rebuild one as long as no major parts are broken.
