Hey all, 94 Isuzu rodeo trans problems again. I’m unable to shift out of first gear at all, trans light blinks at me pretty angrily, and its giving me only one code. Code 16. Identifix and shopkey are both useless for this, and google has failed me as well. Short of dropping the tranny and rebuilding/replacing it, I don’t know what to do. Can someone please at least tell me what code 16 is, if anything?

I found this info, but it is stating that that code will not set CEL? i will do some more checking later today. Maybe some one else is knowledgeable on this code. I don’t recall ever seeing this code.

        Circuit Description
The Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor is a Thermistor within the internal wiring harness of the Transmission in the adaptor case Oil Pan. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) applies 5 volts to the Sensor Connector M5 Terminal 3C. The other side of the Sensor is connected to ground through the TCM Terminal C14. When the Transmission Oil is cold, the Sensor resistance is high and the TCM will sense high signal voltage.
As the Transmission Oil temperature warms to normal Transmission operating temperature of 80°C (176°F), the Sensor resistance becomes less and the voltage decreases at about 3.5 volts. Note, for more accuracy the measurement is done differently for low temperature (less than 45°C) and high temperature (more than 50°C).
When DTC 16 is set, the Transmission will use a warm value for operation, but the Scan Tool will display the actual Oil temperature.

is Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) does not flash the “CHECK TRANS” Indicator and does not set the Backup Mode.

        Diagnostic Aids
This diagnostic is an electrical test done by the TCM (we call it an “electrical test”).
        Detection Conditions:
Voltage between Terminals B3 and C14 less than 0.4 volts.
The condition needs to be present for at least 20 seconds. During the detection time the TCM reads the low voltage that defines a 170°C temperature.
        Action After The Detection Time:
Default Transmission Oil temperature is set to 100°C. But Winter Mode still available.
        Recovery Conditions:
To recover when voltage is more than or equal to 0.4 volts after detection time.

Is the engine coolant temp working properly? Will also cause trans issues.

In everything I looked up according to your description, I used the 3.2L engine BTW, it came back with replacement of the transmission as the fix.

You might check the operation of the speed sensor and coolant temp sensor. You might also see if you can verify that the shift solenoids are being commanded to shift. If not, then it could be an electrical problem or TCM. If they are, then it’s likely a transmission problem.

the coolant temp sensor seems to be working properly, as the temperature gauge on the dash is working. i dont have a scan tool or adapter that will work with these diagnostic connectors in my personal tools or at the shop i work at. if it turns out to be the trans thats bad (high probability), im just gonna scrap it and convert it to a manual. im going to try to get it towed to the shop this week to get it on a lift to diagnose it better (id do it today, but i barely fit under the rodeo on the ground and its awfully cold here in nc lol). thank you both for your input, and ill keep you guys updated.

You might check with your local salvage yards to see if the transmission is available. That’s really not a transmission you want to get into if you can avoid it. You might try checking here.
