Is the cel lit up ? if so pull the code(s) and post them. I would start with a check of the mechanical timing. then start looking for a possible vacuum leak.

The temperature issue could also point at the coolant temp sensor.

Timing things by ‘ear’ is not a good practice, if the engine is not timed correctly you could damage it, it could also have a loss of power and performance issues if it’s not timed correctly.
