Well, the 86 c10 is having tranny problems again… I have a little leak at the seal where the shaft from the torque converter enters the bellhousing (i think) so I have to top it off every so often, but anyway. When im driving the pickup and when the truck is under load or just taking off from a light, there is a metallic jingling sound. It doesnt do it in park or neutral to I ruled out anything at the engine. Anyone got ideas? I plan on getting a 700r4 in the next year or so but is this something I should be concerned about in the meantime? Is the transmission gonna fail on me?

check your u joints and exhaust.Put the rear on jack stands
and have someone put it in gear while you watch and listen.

Most likely the fluid leak is the front transmission pump to torque convertor seal. About 90% of the time the front pump to torque convertor bushing needs replaced along with the seal to repair the leak.

After you do what college man says and the noise is still there….. if the noise goes away or almost goes away when the transmission shifts into second the planetary gears/shaft bushings are worn.

When you put the 700 R4 in make sure you change the fluid, filter and flush the torque convertor, drive it for awhile than change the fluid and filter. Also install a transmission cooler.

If you use the truck for heavy duty use, change the fluid and filter every 12,000 miles…normal use every 30,000. The full transmission flush you hear about, than a filter change is the best…but expensive.

If you decide to keep the 350…do the same after the repair.

If you do the PM maintenance as above you can get a lot of trouble free miles on those transmissions.

I have seen the hanger bearing protector ring come loose from the driveshaft (usually on 2 piece shaft). That will cause the jingling noise you describe as the driveshaft rotates.

I use the term “jingling” loosely. Tbh its more of a knocking like if you take the end of a screwdriver and knock it on some metal. I lifted up the rear, and was unable to replicate the sound. So, as I suspected it only happens under load. Like even if my foot is on the throttle downhill it goes away, but when I go back uphill it comes back. Sometimes when it happens it gets louder as apply more throttle. I seriously cant figure out where the sound is coming from, I put 2 microphones right next to and toward the rear of the truck and I couldnt determine the location. Now, without telling me my brother ripped my exhaust off right at the header so now I cant hear shit…
