      This is the 302 rebuild discussed earlier in another topic on the mysterious black hole. Today I took the heads off and found something a bit interesting concerning the head gaskets. It appears that whoever put this engine back together before me used ATV to seal the water jacket holes. I thought you were not suppose to do this as it would inhibit coolant circulation around the engine block.

      Am I missing something here, or does it look like sloppy work to you too? The first pic is from the back of the block, the second, from the front.

        One other update on the history of this engine. When I bought the truck, it was running a bit hot, but not overheating.

        I went in and checked the entire cooling system:

        • Radiator looked new with no visible rust inside.
        • Heater core also looked relatively new.
        • Thermostat was operating as the top hose was warm after a few minutes.
        • Hoses looked to be in good shape, with no coolant leaks at the connections.
        • Water pump was old, so I ordered a new one and was about to install it when I decided to go into the engine and do a general rebuild, as it was old (32 years), leaking oil, and not particularly peppy.

        I’d like to think that maybe this was the core (lol) of my problem with the engine running hot – plugged up water passages at the gasket.

          The fact that most everything but the waterpump was new looking reinforces my thoughts on some stop-leak crap that I wouldn’t put in my worst enemy’s car. I’m not sure how effective it would be, but you may be able to have the block cleaned at a machine shop, and I would again suggest you have it checked for cracks, considering the hole that was in the first thread you posted. Good luck man.

          I just saw yer last line. Yes, that could EASILY and most likely be the cause of an overheat condition in that particular situation.

            I would definitely have that block checked out by the machine shop as i stated in your other thread as it looks like that block my need some ‘love’.

              Are you sure that isn’t a ton of some sort of coolant system leak repair-er? I can’t imagine why anyone would block off coolant passages with RTV or anything for that matter. Whatever is in there, it looks like it is present in all the water jackets that I can see… What is the history of this engine? It already had a whole in the block. This looks crazy though.

                Beefy, I think you may be right about the coolant leak repair. My brother looked at the pics and said the same exact thing.

                Didn’t even think of that one. In fact, now that I look again, the gel stuff covers up some of the other holes as well.
