I took out the pistons, rods, cam, crank, and all bearings yesterday. Block is about ready to be cleaned and checked out at the machine shop.
I had already planned on replacing the camshaft, but thought it would be informative if I learned a little bit about what the little wear marks mean. If you view this pic on a laptop, you may have to tilt it a bit to see the marks I am talking about.

Checked with my ford guru friend. he has seen this before says it is usually poor casting areas . btw I sent you an email re: the mystery hole – wondering if you got it ?
Normal wear. Cam lobes are not flat but rather pointed on one side, lifters are also actually domed on the bottom, they are machined this way so that as the lobe contacts the lifter it causes the lifter to rotate in it’s bore to even out the wear, over time the lifters and cam lobes become ‘flat’ and cause the wear patters that your seeing there. This wear can be accelerated if someone goes in and replaces just the lifters without replacing the cam, this is why you always need to replace a cam and lifters as a set so that they wear together properly.
