I am presently working as a Field Work Technician with a lot of stop and going different places in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a Hot, Dry and Dusty place I been researching about the 3,000mile Oil Change myth, but here Toyota is implementing 3,000mile myth in changing Engine Oil even the Owner’s manual is the same, I would like to ask is it possible to use 5,000 mile rule or more in Oil Change and disregarding the manual is it advisable? I felt Toyota is trying to squeeze every penny in my pocket for following their 3,000mile rule.

In my opinion it is a myth. I have a 2004 subaru forester and two 1999 F250 super duties 7.3 diesels.
Along with my oil changes I pull an oil sample to be sent into Blackstone Labs. Based on the results and the reports I get back the Subaru is at 5,000 miles (non synthetic) on an oil change and the diesels at at 10,000 miles (Delo 400). The Subaru has 156,000 miles and the diesels have 271,000 and 200,000 miles. I’ve been oil sampling since 2005. I would suggest sampling the oil at 3,000 miles and see what the results are. I also sample the trans fluid as well.

i think it has to do with the local quality of the refined oil that you have available to you. In the United States, yes it is a myth. I have trolled the Bob is the Oil Guy UOA forums for several years and consistently i’ve seen scientific results that often Dino (non synthetic) oil has easily achieved 5000 miles consistently with enough additives left for a short while longer.

You can save a few bucks by stretching the time between oil changes, I have been changing the oil (synthetic) every 6,000 miles on my cars since 1984. We’ve gotten up to 180,000 miles on the cars until trading them in and not a drop being burned and no other ill effects noted. Taking off the valve cover shows no signs of sludge at all.

However, some stingy auto makers, like Dodge, can deny your warranty claim if you can’t show oil change receipts every 3,000 miles, and done at the dealership too. Dodge had a spate of engines dying from clogged oil passages and they used every possible excuse to deny claims.

So if your engine model has a history of being tempermental, and it’s still in warranty, you’re pretty much stuck with doing dealer oil changes at sometimes exorbitant rates.

I would follow the to toyota guidelines of 3k based upon the extreme conditions it is operating in. Having a bit of middle eastern experience ihave seen engines that have burned up all their oil in short order due to all the dust and sand…

Spent time in Afghanistan and agree 100%, in that environment 3,000 might just be to long between changes. The heat and sand tear things to pieces (that sand/dust gets EVERYWHERE)
