      Hey Guys Im new to ETCG and im not sure if this is the correct forum so cut me some slack. BTW I am A certified tech and also own/operate A small shop w/ A partner. 2000 windstar (200K) came in today with horrible misfire (cyl 2&3). The wires for cyl. 2&3 were burnt, split open & obviously bad (plugs & wires were original w/ 200k plus miles). I replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, cleaned throttle body, and OFL. I cleared the codes test drove the van and all was well. 2 hours later I was moving the windstar and while in reverse I noticed a slight miss so I took another test drive van ran great. Now if you load it up in REVERSE ONLY at about 1800 RPM it has a miss but under normal driving conditions its fine!! I replaced the coil pack with 2 different test coils, checked for cracked plugs, checked for vacuum leaks, checked & cleaned EGR & passages, checked compression,all were OK/normal. Did power balance test at least 5 times with a scanner & a sun machine. Power balance showed very, very, very slight drop offs on cylinders 2-3-5 intermittently or at random. Im pulling my hair out!!!! HELP!! PLEASE!!

        Also no codes present after several trips. I see that this forum says No questions but I wasnt sure if that applied to tech on tech help.

          Mike,

          I’m a newbie here myself, so I don’t know how they feel about such posts in this forum, but I have seen a few here before. They are good folks here and don’t get horsey about things. Most folks who log on this forum are troubleshooting problems, so that means most folks know what it’s like and are willing to cut you some slack.

          To your problem, you have probably already investigated this, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. Is the engine torqueing in reverse such that it is moving any ground cables or anything else such that it might be causing your problem?

          Just a thought. We’ve all gotten our problem child troubles to solve and they can be frustrating. My GrandDad, who was a Texas Rancher used to say “there was never a horse that couldn’t be rode, and never a cowboy that couldn’t be throwed.” Hang in there and keep looking, you’ll ride that horse if you just stay with him.

            It was a plug wire!! Over the years I’ve purchased several different types of parts that were bad straight out the box. However I’ve never gotten a bad wire!!! Its not like I bought the cheapest wires available these were motorcraft. I couldn’t find the bad spot/break in any of the wires. I didn’t get my meter out but I did remove all the boots for visual inspection and all looked fine. It took me 2.5 days to even consider changing the wires and the only reason I did was desperation. Anyone else ever gotten a bad wire?

              I cant say I have ever had a bad wire but I did a tune up on a 99 chevy pickup and when I was done it ran worse than when I started. I had a bad cap out of the box.

                I had the exact issue in a 03 Taurus, I was fortunate and noticed it with my timing light. Crazy firing times. The coil burnt up because of it. So I replaced the coil and replaced the wires and it ran great. Then a day or so later I noticed it acting up slightly. Sprayed around the engine and noticed the IACV was leaking. Pulled it off, I could see where it was leaking, made a gasket for it and the car ran great from that point forward. The thing seems to be with Ford is they act up and damage other parts and slowly start running bad. Multiple issues are always there. Not sure if the ECU was trying to make up for the failings of the wires, but usually what I have found it is a total domino effect with Fords.
