Question is about 08 Honda V6 Ridgeline noise. Is this a Piston Slapping or Valve clacking noise? Have listened to posts on youtube which sound very similar. Discussed with local Honda Svc Mgr, he had 3 techs listen to it, they had no clue what was causing the noise. They said they could do some exploring for the noise but would have to charge. Svc Mgr said just drive it, that the valve adjustment may not solve the noise issue. He said it sounded like piston slap. It sounds like something is not getting lube, or is out of adjustment. Is this common to higher mileage Honda 3.5 V? Do I need the valves adjusted to eliminate this on the check list? Suggestions welcome…Thank You Sounds like this.

It sounds like the top end of the motor. either valve adjustment
or the rocker shaft bridge. here is a link to help find the noise.
The doctor will see you now. 🙂Yeah, maybe top end but I’d suggest sacrificing the oil filter. Cut it open and look for metal in the pleats.
A piston noise will come and go with throttle position but usually under acceleration and a valve noise would be there at any throttle position. A connecting rod noise will be more noticeable at higher rpm.
I believe those engines are tough on front bank pistons.
Unplug ignition coils one at a time. If there is a piston or rod issue the noise should go away with the load removed from the affected piston or rod. If the noise does not go way then it will be in the rock bridge assembly or valve lash setting..
Friend of mine who owns and operates an Independent Honda/Acura shop had his personal similar vintage Pilot with the V6 motor that developed same kind of noise. He pulled the valve covers and discovered a cam lobe that had gone flat. He uses synthetic oil on regular schedule, and as none of the other lobes was bad it looks like a metallurgical problem. Car out of warranty so repair cost was on him.
