I am a big rig mechanic and after having to torque u-bolts on the rear axle of a narrow spaced frame truck ie im lying on my back while holding up the torque wrench and not having anything to push off with my legs; That it would be a good idea to find a 3/4″ torque wrench that is either 4ft+ in length or 3ft with a pin hole for an expansion handle.

Unless someone knows that there is a higher torque the highest I would need to go is like 1780ft lbs. With a torque multiplier divide that by 4 so a 600ft lb is the highest i will need. I am looking for any brand recommendations or advice on it.

Also wouldn’t mind if people had a trick for a way to hold the end of the torque wrench up against the U-bolts. I see all kinds of makes and models so it would obv need to be adjustable to hold against the torque wrench head. edit: I feel really stupid bungie cord or belt for this problem.

I’m watching for recommendations too mdk. I don’t need one quite that heavy, but the range you indicate is probably what I will end up with. My initial need is for torqueing Powerstroke head studs. IIRC, they take about 350.

Maybe someone will show up soon with some usable feedback.

I like Precision Instruments spit-beam torque wrenches, they make a 3/4″ model up to 600 ft-lbs. Think the key for you is a custom reaction plate to work with the multiplier. Our AMSA shop guys fabricate their own for military vehicles from designs they find.

My next buy will be a precision instruments 1/2″ or a cdi. They (Cdi) manufactures all of snap-on’s torque wrenches and if you look around you can find them for a 1/4 of the cost. I think the PI split beam your looking for will run you around 350 IIRC.
