      So here’s the deal, I have always serviced my mothers car. Its an 04 grand am gt 3.4. She bought it with 40,xxxx miles and it now has 120,xxxx miles on it. I usually ran castrol gtx 5w30. My mom took her car in to have the tires rotated and balanced (free service) and the shops “mechanics” suggested that my mom get an oil change done so she agreed and the shop put catsrol gtx 5w30 high mileage synthetic blend in the car. Its been roughly 500 miles and the engine is noisier then it was previously, the oil is already a dirty black color and feels really thin. No leaks though but the car didn’t have leaks to begin with. A few questions I have;
      1.)Should I switch back to regular dino oil at the next interval change?
      Should I change it before the next interval change since it is so dirty looking, I assume its giving the engine a good cleaning?
      2.) is the noise harmful?
      3.)Someone told me that the hm synthetic has a darker color compared to their regualr dino oil to begin with so I shouldn’t really worry about color.
      4.)This question is more for my use, if the automobile calls for 5w30, should you run a 10w30 oil if you want to run a synthetic or synthetic blend, like a high mileage oil since its thinner then regular dino oil?
      Opinions please?

        synthetic will trap carbon deposites from blowby better which is supposed to prevent sludge build up, something to keep in mind with synthetic oil is though it has the same viscosity as a conventional “dyno oil.” it flows easier through parts, this may take a engine that is usually a little noisy with conventional oil and make it a little more noisy.

        i also know the 3100 and 3400SFI engines are known to have piston slap as the pistons wear out quickly inside the cylinders causing excessive play which can make a sort of ticking noise, with enough of the cylinders doing this i have often heard people compare the sound their engine makes to that of a diesel engine. also something to note is sometimes the rockers come loose at times in the 3400 SFIs so just keep in mind these things.
