Hey guys. I recently found a problem with my truck. it is a 94 Toyota pickup 22re. it runs great at idle and when smoothly accelerating but one I give it wide open throttle it seems to bog down and not give me any power. The truck runs great except for when It hits higher RPMs when its under load or over half throttle. I pride myself on keeping this truck running great and this one has got me confused. I was thinking it could possibly be the Mass airflow Sensor? or maybe a fuel pump? also I recently did cap rotor wires and plugs so I don’t think its an ignition problem.
P.S. Eric, I love your videos, I appreciate what you are doing for us backyard mechanics!

Eric, this is exactly what I was thinking, once it started involving wiring and ECUs, I realized I was in over my head. I guess you’re right, I am a “Noob”. 🙁 haha. For the past week I’ve been searching for a shop in my area that specializes in automotive wiring. Not much has come up. Except for two that I found yesterday on Yelp! So, I will be giving them a call tomorrow when I get out of work, if they are still open. Good thing I’ve got the good ol’ Type 3 Fastback to drive till I can get my daily driver fixed.

Yea, sometimes it’s good to know when it’s over your head or it could end up costing you in the long run. Keep us posted on it’s progress, I’d love to know how this story ends.

sorry it has been a while since I’ve said anything. you guys aren’t going to believe what happened. I did some shop searching and took it to a shop that turned out to be really nice. they kept the truck for a couple days and told me I had to come in and look at it. the owner said he had never seen anything like it before. nor have I. two of the exhaust lobes on my cam were completely ground down to a round circle shape. they were no longer opening two of the exhaust valves! crazy stuff. this happened because about 6 months ago I had a cylinder head job done to the truck at not so good shop and somehow they manage to ruin it. so I put a new rebuild in it. runs great. now. ill try and upload some pictures of the camshaft.

That’s crazy unusual but it can cause the issue. I’m glad you found a shop that does such good work. I know some places that would have been scratching their heads for days while they continued to throw parts at it. Tell them I said, “good job”. Thanks for the updates. Keep us posted about any future developments.

hey guys im back again. the truck has been running great for a few months now. but lately ive noticed it has developed a miss at idle. so I did a tune up, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and air filter. but after that im still getting a misfire at idle and when bringing revs up in neutral. but it seems fine while im driving it. ive also checked for vacuum leaks. but nothing. any ideas? ill probably end up taking it to the shop I was with with last time. but id like to figure it out myself

I would start with a power balance test. remove each
injector connector to see if we can narrow what cylinder
            is having an issue.

interesting new developments, i was about to mess with the injector connectors when I decidided I would take a look at the throttle position sensor connector since ive had issues with it before, so I pulled the connector off the tps and it ran without the miss. well it might’ve jumped once but not nearly as bad as it did. so I plugged it back in expecting it to go back to missing, but it didn’t. it kept running pretty well. before it would miss a few times every 10 seconds but now its like once every 20. so still not sure. bad tps? tps needs adjustment? im even okay with leaving it like it is 😛 but don’t want a bigger issue to come up because I ignored a symptom of something deeper :pinch:
