Preface

Where to begin? Last summer I bought a 1993 EG8. The car is in excellent condition for its year, has been garage kept and stored in the winter for the last 10 years by the previous owner. Not a single trace of rust to be found on the entire car. A rare find in Southern Ontario, otherwise known as the rust belt. I have continued the practice of storing this car for the winter months. Picked up an 01 Civic Si for next to nothing, but needed a trans. So I put a trans in it and has become my designated winter beater.

Its got a great paint job, pretty decent interior, lowered on skunk2 springs/sleeves and has a B18B swap [unknown miles] with a B16 hydro trans and 2.5″ stainless exhaust. Paid $2800 and drove it hard all summer. I felt this was a fair price considering the condition of the car in my area.

It didnt take long to notice the car had a smoking problem. Hard acceleration resulted in blue oily smoke the color of the car, and was consuming on average a quart of 10w30 a week. I’m estimating this engine has in around the 160 to 200k KMs on it. Needless to say its a tired engine in desperate need of attention.

**Engine is being pulled and dissembled on Sunday, the 24th and parts will be sent to my machinist in about a week. I will do my best to take photos and document the build from start to finish. This will be my first engine overhaul and I’m really looking forward to it. Ive done a ton of research and have an awful lot of notes written down for reference, and PDF copies of the FSM’s for a 92-95 Civic and 94-01 Integra. This may be a rather conservative build performance wise. However, I hope to turbo this car in a the next year or two, and this ought to provide a solid platform to get me to my goal. A reliable 250HP Boosted LS**

        Update [March 24, 2013]

Engine/Trans is out. Engine disassembly diddn’t happen today. I’m exhausted after having a 56 hr work week.

        Update [March 26, 2013]

Engine is on the stand and the head is off. Had a bit of a shocker pulling the cams. 4 out of the 24 cam cap bolts were only finger tight.. Upon close inspection the cam journals and caps in question appear to be ok, no scratches or anything. Ill have to mic them to be sure. Also, it would appear this engine has had a rather unfortunate treatment, stop leak. The shit is everywhere!

The head, in all its nastyness!

        #4 Combustion chamber.

All the cylinder walls are in rough shape. #1, 2, 3 have some cross hatching left, but not quite what I was hoping for. #4 cylinder wall has more less no cross hatch what so ever, just a glazed mirror finish with an ever so slight reminiscence of cross hatching. I suspect failure of #4 oil control ring the be the major contributing factor here. Would also explain the condition of #4 Combustion chamber.

        Cylinder #2 [** 1, 2, 3 looked nearly identical]

          Update [March 27, 2013]

Took the head to work today to clean and lap the valves. All went fairly smooth. #4 Exhaust valves are toast though. Ill have to pull apart my spare head and steal a pair from it. Gave the seats a cleaning with a mini brass wheel and a quickie in the parts washer. Hopefully tomorrow I can start cleaning up the Intake runners.

          Valves all cleaned up.

Just tidying up. Removing all the carbon buildup from the valve seats before lapping.

All 16 lapped and a quick cleanup in the parts washer. Some very minor pitting in a few of the seats. Nothing to loose sleep over. This isnt going to be a 600hp race engine so im happy with how it turned out.

#4 exhaust valves. Theres no helping these. Time to start tearing down my spare head for a pair of valves and re-lap #4 exhaust.
