Both headlights on my Jetta went out at the same time. Of course the first thing I did was check the bulbs, and of course that’s not the problem. I’m guessing it is a fuse but it is hard to find the fuse diagrams and schematic. Yesterday the battery was dead so I jumped it to get it started and drove it around for about 30 min to charge it and as soon as I got home and turned it off it wouldn’t start up again. Could these things be related?

A battery can go bad and headlights can burn out if the alternator is overcharging.
Whether or not that’s the issue with your car requires diagnostic testing.

Fuse charts are usually on the inside of the fuse box cover and the owner’s manual should also list the fuses.
If you don’t have the owner’s manual, then Ebay might be a reasonably priced source.

Unlike many other manufacturers, VW doesn’t give you free online access to the owner’s manual.

You can buy a fuse tester or a test light and check the fuses in both the underhood and in car fuse boxes.

If all fuses are good, you’ll have to test relays.
If those are good, then a control module may be bad.
Wiring issues are possible but less likely in a 3 year old car.

It might be worthwhile to buy an online AllData subscription to access repair info for your car.

Thank you for answering me so quickly. My local library has everything in their database, I found all the information I need and even printed it out right at the library.

            You’re welcome.
How nice that your library has such excellent resources.
