I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra with a 1.8 engine and auto trans. The car sat for one week without being started/driven and it developed a crank / no start problem with an unusual sound coming from the starter. When you go to start the car it turns the starter very slowly and has a “chug, chug, chug” sound. Since the car just turned 50K miles and it has its original battery, I said it has to be the battery. Checked the battery and here were the results:
Resting voltage: 12.5
Running voltage: 14.5
Short Cranking voltage: 10.4
Long Cranking voltage: 7.8I guess that’s not too bad for a battery over three years old… Just to make sure I tried a known good battery in the car, thinking it was a battery problem. The same thing happened with this second battery – starter turns slowly and makes a “chug, chug, chug” sound. When this first started happening, I managed to get the car started a few times by putting the trans in neutral – starter still turned slowly, but it did start. But, now, whether its in park or neutral, the car won’t start. Also, the battery is keeping its voltage numbers, so the battery is not draining…
I’m trying to think what direction to go on this problem without being a parts changer. Does this sound like it might be a starter problem, solenoid problem, or a relay problem? Not sure what other components I should be looking at. What’s confusing is the car only has 50K miles on it, so I’m not sure where I should look to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks for your help!
