      Hello,

2012 kia forte coupe with 29K miles, when braking hard, the brake start skipping/slipping. I can feel some kind of a gear/bearing grinding. What could cause such problem? Brake fluid is between the max and min line. Could it be air in the system? or master cylinder?
I have been told that it is the ABS system, but 6 months ago it was not acting like that.

It could be a wheel bearing or your brakes are nearing replacement.
        see if this link helps.

It sounds like a visual inspection is in order. I’d recommend you remove the wheels and inspect the brakes to see what you’re dealing with. There’s videos on that, along with additional helpful information about brakes in the article College man posted for you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If you are braking hard enough to activate the ABS system, you’re going to experience unusual noises and pedal sensations while the system is doing its job.

Was this an isolated incident, or can you get it to happen repeatedly? If it’s a one-time thing, it might have been due to braking hard on a mixed road surface, like puddles and dry spots, sand or gravel on the pavement, and so on.

If it happens more often, take a look at your tires. Are they a mix of old and new? Are they all at the same inflation pressure? Are any of them showing extreme signs of unusual wear?

If your vehicle is still under warranty (they have a 5yr / 60k mile warranty) I would suggest taking it to the dealership.
